What Was Your Baby’s First Word?
Posted on November 6, 2008 in Photo Baby Announcement by little mochi
At 16 months, Little Mochi has yet to call me “mama” or his dad “dada.”
But, he does know how to put a phone to his ear and say “eyo?” Or point at our fish tank and say “yu” (that’s fish in Chinese). by 18 months, he should know how to say at least 5 words. 5 words?
So what was your kid’s first word and at what age (month) did he say it?

LOL. I think I’m one of the few parents who forgot my own child’s first words… that’s why I wrote everything down. My baby said “baba” first before she said “mama” on Mother’s Day. =)
Oh, that was when she was 6 months old. She was born a chatter-box. LOL.
Adrian had 2 words by 18-months: “mum-mum” and “bye-bye”. His receptive language was delayed too, meaning that he did not seem to understand simple words spoken to him. That was when we had his hearing checked out, applied for early intervention, and scheduled an appointment with a developmental pediatrician (because the wait can be up to a year long!).
Most late-talkers are exactly that — they are late but eventually catch up. It never hurts to get an evaluation if you are concerned, and speech therapy can often benefit not only the child who is developmentally delayed, but also the child who is “normal” and will eventually catch up with his peers.
At Adrian’s 18-month well-baby visit, our pediatrician’s advice was to “wait-and-see”. There is no need to wait, however. We didn’t. A parent or caregiver can request a free evaluation from the state without a doctor’s referral, and the federal government requires that a social worker from the state respond to your request and complete an evaluation of your child within a mandated amount of time (I think it’s 60 days). If your child is under age 3, this is usually done by the state’s Early Intervention program; over age 3, it is done by the school district.
My daughter has been saying “mamamamama” for about a month now and a short while after that started saying “dadadadadada”. We’ve started telling her “Dada” and she starting saying that the past couple of days. My husband thinks it may be her first word but I’m not sure. She just turned 5 months a few days ago and was saying “Dada” to her little frog. Is it any word or when they say something they recognize?
