Little Mochi’s Infant Diarrhea, Part I
Posted on December 26, 2007 in Health & Safety by little mochi
It all started yesterday, on Christmas Day. It wasn’t very convenient since we were having Christmas dinner with my brother in-law’s girlfriend’s family. By the end of the night, I swear, he had pooped 5 times. 4 out of the 5 times, it was just a little bit. Not really a full diaper of poop. It wasn’t so bad at first. But it seemed to have gotten worse later. I’m referring to his poop. It was yellowish and runny.
Today, Wed. Dec 26, 2007. Pooped 3 times. Still runny and yellowish. Called the pediatrician. He suggested rice cereal to help absorb the acids in Little Mochi’s stomach and pedialyte to help with dehydration. But I haven’t even started him on solids yet! So he suggested Enfamil AR. AR is thickened with rice starch. I called my mom and finally told her that Little Mochi has diahhrea. Of course, the overly worried grandma goes nuts over that fact that I didn’t tell her sooner. She suggested that we give Little Mochi pedialyte and thickened rice water from rice porridge. Perhaps I’ll try that later. But for now, I wanted to give the Enfamil AR a try.
I am beginning to wonder if the trip the Aquarium of the Pacific on Christmas Eve had anything to do with his diahhrea. Perhaps there were bacteria from all the animals. Perhaps taking him there at nearly 6 months old was not a good idea after all. Or it could be purely coincedental.

Haha, you know you’re a parent when you can talk about poop in great detail without batting an eye. I still smile when I remember how you and Steve freaked out when Albert spoke about poop (and how it smells worse when the baby starts solids) over dinner.
I still remember Adrian’s first bout with diarrhea — I think he must have been about Mason’s age. It lasted more than 10 days and involved about 8-10 dirty diapers a day. We NEVER, EVER use public changing tables after that one time, despite having our own changing pad and tons of sanitizing wipes.
Happy New Year to all of you! Mason is quite the handsome little guy!
*LOL* i remember that too! now i’m the one getting into the details! gross, huh?? it h as now been 1 week and his poop is finally normal. don’t know if it’s b/c his better or if it’s because we changed his formula yesterday.
what did you guys do help with adrian’s diarrhea? i was told that his diarrhea could be because he’s teething…he is teething actually.
by the way, i totally LOVED your elf card!! albert looks hilarious! but so does adrian – he’s so cute in that elf outfit!!! and you…LOL…
adrian should be talking a few words by now, right?
i can’t wait to go camping with our boys when they are older!!
by the way, jasmine…only 10 diapers??!! i think we go through 15-ish! the pedialyte flushes down his system real quick! we had to change his diaper practically every hour during the daytime.
I can’t remember if we did much at all to treat Adrian’s diarrhea other than to let it run its course (and, of course, to make sure that he didn’t get dehydrated). There are all sorts of highly contagious viruses out there, and I’m sure things will get much worse when he starts school someday. Oh well … at least they’re building up their immune systems, right?
Adrian is generally doing very well — however, at 19 months he is speech delayed, has some fairly major feeding issues (since birth), and has also been diagnosed with something called sensory integration dysfunction. I am thinking about starting a blog myself so that I can exchange thoughts and support with other blogging parents with similar circumstances, but where does one find the time? I suppose I could always sacrifice some precious sleep time — but I really do love my sleep:)
I think that’s my lesson learned about diarrhea…to just let it pass. I guess we got scared. I think we gave him too much pedialyte and no real solid food at one point.
Keeping a blog doesn’t necessary have to be time consuming. Make a post once a week or once every other week would probably be sufficient. I think it’d also be a great journal – you can keep track of Adrian’s development there. your blog would be a great blog as it is very niched.
Another option would be to join a social networking site for moms, such as CafeMom.com, and form a SID group. You can share and exchange thoughts there.
Steve and I are actually going to build a social networking site for moms soon (BabyWriter.com). Currently, the site is set up for my newsletter sign ups. But the main page will be the social networking page. Is SID closely linked to autism? What type of therapy is Adrian going through, if he is going through any? Please keep me posted on Adrian’s progess.
You make a very good point that starting a blog could be one way to keep a record of Adrian’s development. Thanks so much for the comments and info. I am looking into possibly starting something soon … just need to get my lazy butt moving.
I am in the process of trying to get Adrian evaluated for autism, but it is an uphill battle full of uncertainty, adversity, confusing stops and turns, a range of emotions, and no shortage of red tape. What we do have is a growing list of separate delays and disorders resulting from evaluations completed to date: feeding issues, speech delay, SID, reflux with esophagitis, etc. We have begun treatment in all of these identified areas except speech, which will likely involve a wait list that we haven’t been added to yet. The feeding and GI issues are the only ones that were acknowledged by our son’s pediatrician. We are working with our state’s Early Intervention Program to access additional services, and it is here that I am making a push for more evaluations, assessments, and treatments if necessary. At the very least, Adrian will receive treatment for all of the issues listed above — most of which (excluding the GI treatment) will be free of charge for us.
Thanks again for the helpful advice and info. I’m glad to hear that Mason’s diarrhea has passed:) I’ll be looking forward to the launch of your BabyWriter newsletter!
I think it’s a good point that to grow and keep a record of Adrian development. You need be patient and enjoy…..
