How To Stop A Crying Baby
My husband and I have compiled a list of things to do (a checklist) when Mason starts crying. For almost all occassions, he cries because he wants something or is uncomfortable.
- He’s hungry
Most likely the case everytime he cries. We would give him the pacifier and observe how he suckles it. If he sucks on it like he wants to eat it, then we prepare the milk. - He needs to be burped
Always burp your baby after eat feeding! A small burp can make a huge difference. Sometimes we would burp him for a long time and he still wouldn’t burp. We will usually lie him down and he will get uneazy in his crib. We then pick him up and burp him again. It comes easier for him that way. - He wants his pacifier
After he’s fed, and burped, he may still cry. We would just give him the pacifier and he’s very happy with it. We found out that at 1 month old he’s able to discern between a pacifier and a bottle nipple. We did an experiment of switching back and forth between the pacifier and a bottle nipple. I guess he can taste the milk from a bottle nipple and reject it. - He wants his diaper changed
We always change his diaper after each time we feed him. Ocassionally, we found that he’s not hungry, doesn’t need to be burped, and rejects the pacifier. We really scratched our head thinking what it could be. He just needs a diaper change even though it was just a little leak. We found that he really liks his diaper changed. We can see smiles on his face as he’s being changed. - He wants to be hugged/held
We try not to do this unless there is not other ways to appease him. - He’s too warm/too cold
It’s quite difficult to figure out what a baby wants when he/she cries. It’s even more difficult at the moment the baby cries. You try to fanatically figure out what’s wrong with the baby, and in fact it could be as simple as a diaper change. We keep this list close by him and we work it down the list until he stops crying. I’ll be sure to update this list when I find new things/kinks about Mason.
